The City of Lahore

UCP is situated in the timeless city of Lahore, the capital of Punjab, with a population of about 10 million.

This land has been blessed by the great mystic saints, Hazrat Data Gunj Bakhsh (RA) and Hazrat Mian Mir (RA) whose countless devotees flock to their shrines, round the clock, to pay homage.

Allama lqbal, the poet-philosopher, is also buried at the edge of Hazuri Bagh, not far from the spot where the Lahore Resolution was passed in 1940.

The origins of Lahore are obscured by the mists of time. However, the muslim rule began with Qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1206 and reached the peak of its glory during the period of Mughals (1524 to 1752). They gave Lahore some of its finest architectural monuments like the Lahore Fort, Shalimar Gardens, Badshahi Mosque, Masjid Wazir Khan, tomb of Emperor Jehangir and Chauburji. The mausoleum of Empress Noor Jehan is yet another landmark. Lahore remained the capital of Punjab during the Sikh rule in the 18th and 19th centuries. Then came the British Raj in 1849 which lasted upto 1947. During this period, a harmonious blend of Mughal, Gothic and Victorian architecture sprang up and added to the city's heritage.

Lahore is the cultural hub of the country. Its sights, sounds and smells are unique. The epoch-making Islamic Summit was held here in 1974. Though some of its old landmarks and ancient trees have sadly vanished, Lahore remains a city of incredible beauty and imperishable charm.
