Seminar on "Pakistan - Opportunities and Challenges"

Faculty of Commerce of University of Central Punjab organized a seminar on "Pakistan-Challenges and Opportunities", which was attended by faculty members and students. The guest speaker for the seminar was Mr. Iqbal Latif, an international economist and Chairman Gulf Fund UK.

Mr. Latif gave a candid and through analysis of the challenges faced by Pakistan and also provided feasible solutions. Mr. Latif frequently delivers talks and lectures in renowned universities around the world and on television. He emphasized the need of living in our resources and maximizing the opportunities that God has bestowed upon us. Discussing the water and electricity issues in Pakistan, he said that the Indus is one of the mightiest rivers in the world but the problem is that it originates from a glacier, and therefore it flows for only four months. He said that this is the reason why floods and droughts occur in the country. He emphasized the need of building dams on the river, which is naturally falling from such a height and is ideal to produce electricity.

Emphasizing the need for primary education, he said that if we want long term success and growth we need to invest heavily in education. He further proposed the opening of vocational institutes and exporting trained labor force in the world to generate foreign exchange. He pointed out that the Pakistan has about one billion dollars current account deficit, which needs to be filled and quick decisions are needed to improve the situation. Mr. Latif stressed that "making up our mind" in terms of our overall approach towards life was another necessary step. He said that nations cannot be successful if they live in illusions and confusion.

Mr. Latif also offered his guidance in the fields of economics and finance to the faculty members and students of UCP.
