Winter Smog: Understanding the Science, Debunking the Myths, and Exploring the Solutions

Learning Innovation Center, in collaboration with the Climate Change Research Council, organized a talk on “Winter Smog: Understanding the Science, Debunking the Myths, and Exploring the Solutions,” attended by faculty members, deans, and Pro Rector, Dr. Hammad Naveed. Delivered by Dr. Fesal Toosy, the session explored the science behind winter smog, clarifying that it is not simply “smoke & fog” but a combination of fine particles, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide produced by vehicular emissions and fuel combustion. He explained how temperature inversion traps these pollutants near the ground, making smog more severe in winter. Dr. Toosy stressed that solutions like smog towers and air purifiers are temporary measures, advocating instead for real-time monitoring networks, data-driven mitigation strategies, and collective efforts to reduce emissions, promote clean energy, and enhance public awareness for a cleaner, healthier environment.
