Dean’s Message

Welcome to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FOST), University of Central Punjab. Science is such a gigantic and expanding field that it can at times defy definition. We will work with you to guide you through your formative years as a young scientist to prepare you to succeed in a wide variety of professions and careers. Our aim is to excite your interest in the broader scientific issues of today and tomorrow, and expand your understanding of our universe at all levels. Scientist, teacher, physician, biochemist, or entrepreneur – whatever your career goals are, an education in science and technology will help you get there.

Our disciplines will introduce you to the wonders of the natural world, from infinitesimally small subatomic particles to the infinitely large universe and everything else in between. FOST offers programs in seven departments: Basic & Applied Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science & Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology/Botany, and Biotechnology. Through both practical and theory-based learning using state of the art laboratories and class rooms, we provide the engaging environment required to inspire creativity, innovation, and collaboration.

Our progressive faculty aims to provide its students with excellent, contemporary, academically challenging programs, quality teaching and up-to-date learning environment. Many faculty members in FOST have developed foreign linkages with reputable universities all over the world. These linkages promote collaborative research among the PhD scholars and ensure regular visits of renowned scientists to UCP in order to address our students.

FOST is committed to see all its graduates scientifically trained and well equipped to tackle global challenges. Good luck and I look forward to seeing you explore, discover, and achieve at FOST.

Overview

The Faculty of Life Sciences (FOLS) takes pride in excelling at teaching with a highly qualified faculty, including 17 PhD holders. The impact of Life Sciences is evident in all domains of society, covering health care, environment, energy resources, and food products. FOLS prioritises research and has published 172 research articles in different international scientific journals and presented papers in conferences both at a global and national level. To produce competitive and market-oriented students, we have established a Student Career Counselling Group with FOLS Alumni to promote career opportunities for the graduates. At FOLS, we value innovation, learning, and the advancement of knowledge, research, and applications toward improving the use of medications in society and pharmaceutical care. We continually endeavour to improve our national and international influence through quality education and research.

Department of Biotechnology

In the discipline of Biotechnology, Degrees are offered at the level of MS, M.Sc. and BS. Faculty is highly competitive and strives to fulfill significant demand in Biomedical, Pharmaceutical and Industry. A large number of students are seeking admission during each semester to qualify for higher research programmes within the university while a good proportion of meritorious students aim to pursue further research studies in different overseas universities after completing degrees from FoLS. Graduating students may seek employment in the renowned organizations in this country as well as abroad.

Department of Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a central discipline to all Branches of Biology/Life Sciences. It deals with the chemical nature, function, structure, energetic and pathways of synthesis and degradation of simple to complex biological and/or cellular molecules to understand the various aspects of cellular and molecular functions in development, health and disease with applications in Biotechnology, Microbiology and Medicine. Biochemistry at FoLS is one of the most vibrant and visible faculty among the Pakistani Universities because of its location, the competition for admission in the Ph.D., MS and BS Programmes. FoLS has ideal students to the faculty ratio, teaching experience of the faculty, publications, extra research grants/support that faculty generates from National and International Organizations and in terms of infrastructural facilities. In addition, the faculties are able to fortify collaboration in the new and interdisciplinary research areas such as Nano-Biology, Medical Biotechnology, and Stem Cell Biology etc.

Department of Food Science & Technology

In the discipline of Food Science & Technology, Degrees are offered at the level of BS. Faculty is highly competitive and strives to fulfill significant demand in Food Industry. A large number of students are seeking admission during each semester to qualify for higher research programmes within the University while a good proportion of meritorious students aim to pursue further research studies in different overseas universities after completing degrees from FoLS. Graduating students may seek employment in the renowned organizations in this country as well as abroad.

Department of Microbiology

Advances in medicine, greater longevity and a rapidly expanding world population continue to increase the numbers of people at the risk of infection. The situation compounded by the emergence of multi-drug resistant microbes and the lack of new clinically effective anti-infective agents compelled us to establish Microbiology section under FoLS. Research within the Molecular Microbiology Group will be directed towards the acquisition of novel molecular and cellular insights into host-pathogen interactions, quorum sensing and the evolution of virulence and drug resistance with a view to the discovery of new therapeutic and preventative strategies against Viral, Bacterial and Fungal Pathogens.
