UCP Stands Tall in the UI GreenMetric University Rankings 2024
What are UI GreenMetric Rankings?
In 2010, an Indonesian University named Universitas Indonesia (UI) started the UI GreenMetric Rankings. These world university rankings are unique of their own kind, measuring the campus sustainability and the level of its improvement.
These rankings are based on a conceptual framework of three principal components, Environment, Economy and Equity. The 3Es of sustainability. Also known as the sustainability pillars.
This year, the global university UI Greenmetric University Rankings 2024 was published on 12 December 2024. In this 15th edition, 1477 participants from 95 countries competed for the sustainability performance. The rankings were finalised on the theme of “Instituting UI GreenMetric: The Way Forward”
The objectives to publish the rankings based upon the sustainability performance and improvement have a unique set of objectives. In a nutshell, the pointers aim to:
- Support academic discussions on sustainability in education and campus greening.
- Encourage university-led social change towards sustainability goals.
- Act as a self-assessment tool for higher education institutions globally to evaluate campus sustainability.
- Provide information to governments, environmental organisations, and the public on sustainability initiatives on campus.
Methodology Followed
The UI GreenMetric University Rankings evaluate the metrics with key indicators regarding the university policies for sustainability. The details are as follows.
Settings & Infrastructures
The metric focuses on a green environment. The ratio of green space on the campus, the total campus area, the safe environment policy and the development of sustainability across the university campus were calculated.
Energy & Climate Change
Under this metric, it is seen how aware and efficient the university is regarding the energy and climate change issues. The number of energy-efficient plans and climate-friendly programmes undertaken by the university.
Waste Management
How effective, practical, and eco-friendly waste-management initiatives are ongoing in the university. Factors under consideration are organic waste management, a recycling programme, practices for the reduced usage of plastic and paper on the campus, inorganic waste treatment, and toxic waste management.
Water Management
Efficient water usage and reduction in water wastage with the protection of water habitat. This also includes the practices of efficient use and water conservation programme and piper water use in the campus.
Transportation Management
The indicator focuses on the reduction of the campus’s carbon footprint. For instance, how efficient shuttle service on the campus is available. The number of reduced motorcycles and increased number of eco-friendly vehicles like bicycles and Zero Emission Vehicles.
Education & Research
The academic efforts of the university inputs to research and education supporting sustainability through research, papers, and activities.
Why these Sustainability Rankings Important?
The ‘”Sustainability Rankings” are a unique concept in the world of rankings, education, and metrics. You may have a question, why are these sustainability rankings important for universities and academia?

All UI GreenMetric participants are members of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Network (UIGWURN), established in 2017. The network enables the sharing of best practices, global collaboration through workshops, and the hosting of technical sessions at their universities.
Is Any University from Pakistan Included in UI GreenMetric University Rankings 2024?
Yes, 95 countries participated with 1477 universities around the world. 84 public and private universities also participated in the UI GreenMetric University Rankings 2024.
UCP Receives Remarkable Recognition in the UI GreenMetric University Rankings 2024
Among these 84 national public and private universities, the University of Central Punjab (UCP) got 4th rank while in private universities, we stood proudly on the 2nd rank. In addition to these national ranks, UCP has also improved its global standing in the same UI GreenMetric Rankings. From 259 we have ranked 206 in UI Global GreenMetric University Rankings 2024.
This achievement highlights our dedication to sustainability and innovation, with 0.5 MW renewable energy generation, a 500-litre daily water treatment capacity, and 3 RO plants across all buildings.
