The Department provides a vibrant and dynamic environment that encourages excellence in research specifically in the areas of Software Systems & Engineering, Multimedia & Communications, Web and Information Systems and Computational Business Intelligence. The PhD program aims at producing graduates who could meet the challenges of emerging international trends in Computer Science. To achieve this objective, we have a team of highly qualified and dedicated faculty members; a cohesive and carefully designed PhD program. A due emphasis has been placed on the applied and industrial aspects of the research. For this purpose, the Department has established a strong liaison with Research & Development organizations and industry.

PhD Computer Science students have been facilitated with innovative research labs and training by professional researchers and professors, providing the student with opportunities to excel and make a difference in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics, computer vision, natural language processing, advanced data structures, network design/security, real-time systems, theoretical computer science, information retrieval and computer graphics. After the successful completion of the doctoral programme, students have the opportunity to avail partial funding through the faculty development programmes, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and/or fellowships.
The general duties of a computer and information research scientist include:
- Identify problems faced in the country primarily and globally at large
- Develop and design solutions to solve the problems using various domains of knowledge
- Help scientists and engineers solve complex computing problems
- Develop and improve the software systems that form the basis of the modern computing experience
- Design and develop machine learning-based systems to improve decision-making and other complex problem solving
- Design experiments to test the operation of these software systems
- Publish their findings in academic journals
A PhD candidate shall be awarded a degree on successful completion of the following requirements:
- 18 Cr. Course Work with minimum CGPA 3.00/4.00
- Comprehensive Examination (written and oral)
- 30 Cr. Research Work
- Synopsis Defense
- Dissertation Foreign Reviews
- Publication of at least one research paper in HEC approved journal.
- Dissertation Final Defense
